Poland's gold trial strikes from this period occupy an unusual institutional space — produced by Mennica Polska for internal approval and export market testing, they were never intended for domestic circulation under the communist-era restrictions that governed hard currency. The 1987 papal issue commemorates John Paul II's third visit to his homeland, a journey the Polish government delayed and negotiated with the Vatican for years before reluctantly permitting in June of that year.
That visit drew crowds estimated in the millions and is widely credited with accelerating Solidarity's resurgence ahead of the 1989 Round Table Agreements. Trial pieces from this series survive in very small numbers, most traceable to mint archives or early export buyers.
