Additional information

Trial strikes from Mennica Polska in this period occupy a strange bureaucratic space — produced to test dies, approve designs, or satisfy internal mint records, they were never authorized for public release and rarely survived outside official channels. By 1989, Poland was in the final convulsions of communist rule, and the papal series had become politically charged: John Paul II's connection to Solidarity made any coin honoring him a quiet act of institutional tension within a state-run mint still nominally under party oversight.

Struck in nickel rather than the gold of the bullion issue it previews, this piece exists as a production artifact rather than a coin in any commercial sense.
