China's annual lunar gold bullion program has run continuously since 1981, making it one of the longest-running such series in the world. The 500g denominations within that program have always occupied a distinct position — produced in strictly limited quantities relative to the fractional weights, they tend to exit the market quickly into institutional and collector hands and rarely reappear.
The People's Bank has never published official mintage figures for individual lunar issues, a policy that has frustrated dealers and registry collectors for decades.
