The Farmer's Bank of Northwest China was a Communist-controlled institution operating in the Shaan-Gan-Ning Border Region — the revolutionary base area centered on Yan'an that served as the CCP's wartime headquarters. By 1947, the civil war with the Nationalists was accelerating, and the border region's economy was under severe pressure. High-denomination notes like this 5000 Yuan were a direct response to inflation eroding the purchasing power of earlier issues.
Border region currencies were explicitly excluded from Nationalist monetary networks, making them non-convertible outside CCP-held territory. Notes from this late inflationary phase rarely survived the subsequent currency reforms that accompanied Communist consolidation of power.
