The Bank of Shansi, Chahar & Hopei was a Communist-controlled regional bank operating in the Jin-Cha-Ji border region — one of the key base areas held by the Eighth Route Army during the Civil War period. By 1947, the Nationalist-Communist conflict had intensified dramatically, and inflationary pressure in Communist-held territories was driving denominations upward fast. The 5000 Yuan note sits at the high end of what this bank ever issued, reflecting how quickly purchasing power had eroded in the region by that point in the war.
The bank was formally absorbed into the People's Bank of China at its founding in December 1948, making the entire series short-lived by design.
