The Bank of Shansi, Chahar & Hopei — known in Chinese as 晋察冀边区银行 (Jin-Cha-Ji Bianqu Yinhang) — was a Communist-controlled regional bank operating in the border region of the same name, one of the major guerrilla base areas established behind Japanese lines during the Second Sino-Japanese War. By 1947, the bank was issuing high-denomination notes like this 5,000 Yuan piece to cope with severe wartime and civil war inflation that had obliterated the purchasing power of lower values issued just years earlier.

Production was deliberately decentralized, printed at multiple locations across liberated territory to prevent Nationalist forces from disrupting the supply. That origin means paper quality, ink color, and registration vary noticeably across surviving examples of the same pick number.
