The First Series Renminbi, of which this 5000 Yuan note is a part, was issued under extraordinary circumstances — the People's Bank of China had been formally established in December 1948, and note production was scattered across multiple small regional printing facilities, none of which operated to consistent technical standards. The result across the series is notable variation in paper stock, ink saturation, and print registration, sometimes within the same denomination.
First Series notes were demonetized in 1955 at a conversion rate of 10,000 old Yuan to 1 new Renminbi. Surviving circulated examples absorbed decades of heavy use before that deadline.
