Reverse description The upper portion of the field displays the Nagano 1998 Winter Olympic emblem — comprising the five Olympic rings beneath a stylized rising-sun motif with radiating lines and a floral element — flanked by the year 1998 and the inscription NAGANO in Latin script. In the lower right of the field stands a right-facing Japanese serow (Capricornis crispus), the native goat-antelope and symbol of Nagano's alpine wildlife, rendered in fine relief. To the lower left appear the denomination 5000 YEN in Latin characters and the Japanese era date 平成10年 (Year 10 of Heisei) in Kanji. The design is enclosed by a beaded border.
