Obverse description Intaglio portrait of Nitobe Inazō at right, rendered in dark brown tones against a fine guilloche underprint in muted lavender and green. At left centre, an oval vignette of a globe of Earth set within ornate scrollwork, with the large kanji denomination 五千円 above in a decorative panel. Inscriptions 日本銀行券 appear at top centre and 日本銀行 below the portrait, with the serial number and 国立印刷局製造 printed in the lower margin.

Reverse description Central intaglio vignette of Mount Fuji reflected in the calm waters of Lake Motosu, framed by hills and a lone pine tree at lower left, executed in fine dark brown line engraving. At upper left, a circular guilloche rosette in pale violet, and at lower right a red seal stamp. The denomination 5000 YEN is lettered in a decorative panel at the bottom centre, with NIPPON GINKO at top centre and the numeral 5000 at upper right.
