5000 Yen

Japan's 2024 banknote series — the first full redesign since 2004 — was the most technically ambitious currency overhaul in the country's modern history, incorporating 3D hologram strips that are among the most sophisticated deployed on any circulating note worldwide. The 5,000-yen denomination in particular drew attention because the new reverse design replaced Ogata Kōrin's Kōhaku Kōbai painting from the prior series.

The National Printing Bureau began preparations for this series well over a decade before release, partly in response to advances in counterfeiting technology and partly to accommodate tactile features for visually impaired users — the raised print patterns were substantially reworked from earlier standards.
