Struck to mark South Korea's hosting of the 42nd World Shooting Championships in Seoul, this was one of the country's earliest commemorative silver issues and appeared at a moment when the government of Park Chung-hee was aggressively using international sporting events to project national prestige. The championships drew competitors from across the Cold War divide, an unusual diplomatic neutrality for an event held in a country still technically at war with its northern neighbor.
