Issued to commemorate the 1988 Seoul Olympics — the first Games held on the Korean peninsula — this coin was part of a sprawling multi-coin program the Bank of Korea produced across several series between 1982 and 1988. Ssireum, the traditional wrestling form depicted, dates back at least to the Goryeo period and was included in the Olympic program as a demonstration sport that year, not a medal event.
