Issued in 2016 ahead of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Games, this piece is part of a multi-year commemorative program the Bank of Korea launched to build collector interest well before the torch was lit. PyeongChang had bid unsuccessfully for the Winter Olympics twice before — in 2003 for the 2010 Games and in 2007 for the 2014 Games — making the eventual award of the 2018 edition a particularly charged political moment in South Korean sport. Luge, as a discipline, had almost no Korean competitive presence at the time of issue.
