The denomination '5000' is prominently displayed in large numerals at the centre of the field, with the word 'TOLARJEV' inscribed above in smaller lettering. The date '1997' appears in the upper margin. The legend 'REPUBLIKA SLOVENIJA' curves along the lower periphery in bold Latin characters. The overall design is clean and modernist, with no figurative imagery, relying entirely on bold typography within a polished field. |

The reverse features a stylised outline profile of Žiga Zois facing right, rendered as a simplified linear contour occupying the right portion of the field. To the left, the name 'ZOIS ŽIGA' is inscribed in bold sans-serif lettering. A decorative geometric device suggestive of a compass or sundial radiates from the lower centre, evoking Zois's scientific and intellectual pursuits. The birth and commemorative years '1747' and '1997' are inscribed in the lower field on either side of the central motif, marking the 250th anniversary of his birth. |

Žiga Zois (1747–1819) was Ljubljana-born but educated in Vienna, and used his inherited mining fortune to fund a salon that became the intellectual engine of the Slovenian national awakening — hosting linguists, botanists, and poets at a moment when Slovenian as a written literary language was still being invented. His patronage of Jernej Kopitar and Valentin Vodnik was instrumental in establishing the philological groundwork that later movements built upon. This coin was issued in the first years following Slovenian independence, when the Tolar itself was still a young currency, introduced only in 1991 after the ten-day war of secession from Yugoslavia.
