Slovenia's early gold commemorative program was built largely around architectural and natural landmarks as the newly independent state — recognized internationally only in January 1992 — worked to establish a distinct numismatic identity. The Aljaž Tower, erected in 1895 on the summit of Triglav by Jakob Aljaž for a symbolic one florin, gave the 1995 issue a centenary justification neat enough that the mint could hardly pass it up.
Aljaž himself bought the summit plot specifically to prevent Austrian developers from charging climbers a fee to stand there.
