Reverse description A finely detailed equestrian scene occupies the central field, depicting a traditionally dressed Ecuadorian horseman mounted on a prancing horse facing right, wearing a broad-brimmed hat and poncho. A large Andean condor with outstretched wings is rendered prominently to the left of the horse, held or restrained by the rider, with an ornate decorative frame or cage visible behind the group. The date 1999 appears in the lower left field. The legend EL HOMBRE Y SU CABALLO curves along the upper periphery, while the denomination 5000 SUCRES is inscribed along the lower rim, separated by a raised dot, all set against a deeply mirrored proof field.

Additional information

Ecuador struck this issue in 1999, the same year the country's economy collapsed entirely. Dollarization — the abandonment of the sucre in favor of the U.S. dollar — was announced in January 2000 after the sucre lost roughly 75% of its value in a single year. A commemorative silver coin denominated in sucres, minted at that precise moment, was obsolete almost before it left the dies.
