Kenya's 2003 independence commemorative gold issue was authorized as part of a broader series marking the 40th anniversary of independence from Britain in December 1963. The denomination — 5,000 shillings — bore no relationship to everyday circulation; at issuance it far exceeded the face value of any standard Kenyan currency in use, placing it squarely in the proof commemorative category with negligible circulation intent.
Mintage figures for this issue are extremely low, consistent with the Central Bank's limited production runs for gold commemoratives of this period.
