Obverse description The national coat of arms of Kenya occupies the central field, depicting a Maasai shield and two crossed spears supported by two rampant lions, with a cockerel above the shield and agricultural motifs at the base, all above a scroll bearing the national motto HARAMBEE. The denomination '5000' appears in large numerals in the lower field, with 'FIVE THOUSAND SHILLINGS' inscribed along the lower border. The commemorative legend 'COMMEMORATING 40 YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE 1963-2003' arcs around the upper periphery of the coin.
