Uganda's 5000 Shillings series of wildlife coins was produced during a period when the country's economy was still stabilizing under Museveni's government following decades of civil conflict and the catastrophic mismanagement of the Amin and Obote years. These issues were minted primarily for the collector export market — legal tender in name, but never intended to circulate domestically.
The .850 silver fineness is an unusual alloy choice for a modern commemorative, falling between the more common .925 and .999 standards. Whether this reflects a cost-driven specification from the contracting mint or a deliberate design decision is not documented in the KM listing.
