Issued the same year Obote returned to power following the overthrow of Idi Amin and a contested 1980 election widely condemned as fraudulent, this piece belongs to a category of high-denomination gold issues produced almost entirely for export sale rather than domestic use — Uganda's shilling was effectively worthless in real terms by 1981. The Bank of Uganda authorized several such collector pieces during this period, the hard currency from foreign sales being considerably more useful than any nominal face value.
