Somaliland's unrecognized status has always complicated its currency. No international central bank correspondent relationships, no IMF oversight, no external printing contracts with the major security printers — the Somaliland shilling exists entirely outside the frameworks that govern most national currencies, issued by a government that only a handful of states have ever formally acknowledged.

A security thread is the sole mechanical anti-counterfeiting measure on this note, a thin specification for a denomination this large. The two signatories — Abdi Dirir Abdi and Abdi Mohamoud Gullet — held office across the multi-year print window reflected in the 2011–2015 dating range.
