Tajikistan's first national currency, the Tajik rouble, was introduced in May 1995 to replace the Russian rouble following the country's independence — but the notes themselves were printed earlier, hence the 1994 date on this series. The country was in the middle of a civil war when these entered circulation, and the denomination structure, reaching up to 100,000 roubles, reflected an inflationary environment inherited from the collapsing Soviet monetary system.
The Tajik rouble was itself short-lived, replaced by the somoni in 2000 at a rate of 1,000 roubles to one somoni.
