备注

The 5000 Réis in its sixth print iteration sat near the top of the Banco de Portugal's denominations at a time when Portugal's public finances were under severe strain — the country had effectively defaulted on its external debt in 1892 and spent the following decade renegotiating under humiliating terms. High-denomination notes like this one circulated primarily in commercial and interbank transactions; ordinary wage earners rarely handled them.

Printed in-house at the Estamparia do Banco de Portugal, this series represents the bank's growing preference for domestic production over foreign contract printers. The sixth print designation indicates accumulated revisions to the plate or security features across a long production run stretching into the final years of the monarchy.
