Beschrijving keerzijde Four conjoined draped busts of the allied sovereigns of the Napoleonic Wars depicted in left-facing profile at centre, set within a deeply recessed circular field: George, Prince Regent of Great Britain; Francis II, Emperor of Austria; Alexander I, Emperor of Russia; and Frederick William III, King of Prussia, each shown laureate or with classical drapery. Encircling this central portrait group is a broad allegorical border in high relief, populated by a rich array of neoclassical and mythological figures including a triumphal chariot and horses above, winged Victories, martial and seated allegorical personifications, and a reclining river god below, all evoking the triumph of the allied powers and the peace secured by the Battle of Waterloo. The composition closely replicates Thomas Wyon Jr.'s celebrated original Waterloo Medal design of 1815, executed here at monumental scale.

Aanvullende informatie

The Waterloo Medal was originally authorized in 1816 by the Prince Regent — the only British campaign medal issued to every rank, from private to general, who fought on 18 June 1815. That egalitarian decision was genuinely radical for the period. This piece references the Allied leaders series within that commemorative tradition, grouping commanders across the coalition that finally broke Napoleon at Mont-Saint-Jean.

At 5,015 grams of .9999 gold and 175 mm across, this is among the largest gold proof coins the Royal Mint has ever produced — a category where mintages are typically measured in single or double digits.
