Issued to mark the 50th anniversary of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, which was established in 1949 under Republic Act No. 265 — separating the Philippine central bank from the post-war Philippine National Bank structure inherited from the American colonial period. The 1999 date places this squarely in the aftermath of the Asian financial crisis, during which the Philippine peso lost roughly 40% of its value against the dollar and the BSP spent heavily from reserves defending the currency.
Struck in 18-karat gold at 16 grams, the issue was never intended for circulation.
