Laura Montoya Upegui, canonized by Pope Francis in May 2013, became the first Colombian-born saint — making this issue one of the faster commemorative responses by Banco de la República to a national event of that magnitude. Montoya founded the Missionary Sisters of Mary Immaculate in 1914 after decades of work among indigenous communities in Antioquia, operating in a region the Colombian state had largely abandoned.
The 21.75g weight places this among the heavier circulating commemoratives in the Colombian series, issued the same year the peace negotiations with FARC in Havana were accelerating toward the 2016 accord.
