Bolivia's fiscal position in 1984 was deteriorating at a pace that would soon become notorious: annual inflation exceeded 2,000% that year and was accelerating toward the hyperinflationary collapse of 1985, when the rate briefly exceeded 20,000%. The 5,000 Pesos Bolivianos denomination, unthinkable even a decade earlier, was already becoming inadequate for routine transactions by the time these notes reached circulation.
The Bundesdruckerei contract reflects Bolivia's reliance on European security printers during this period, as domestic printing infrastructure could not meet either the technical demands or the sheer volume required. A new currency unit — the Boliviano, replacing the Peso Boliviano at 1,000,000 to one — was introduced in 1987, rendering the entire series obsolete almost immediately after issue.
