The Institut Català del Sol was a Catalan satirical organization, and this note is not legal tender — it is a fantasy or novelty piece, almost certainly produced as a political commentary during the early post-Franco transition years when Catalan autonomy was a live and contentious issue. The 1979 Statute of Autonomy had just restored the Generalitat de Catalunya, and separatist cultural gestures took many forms, printed currency among them.
No issuing banking authority by this name has ever existed. Collectors should catalog it under ephemera or political satire rather than circulating currency.
