Thomas De La Rue had a long-running relationship with Mozambique's post-independence central bank, producing most of the Banco de Moçambique series through the 1980s and into the 1990s. By 1991, the country was still mired in the civil war between FRELIMO and RENAMO that had devastated the economy since the late 1970s — hyperinflationary pressure made high-denomination notes like this one a practical necessity rather than a prestige issue.

The 5000 Meticais was eventually rendered obsolete by the 2006 redenomination, in which 1000 old meticais were exchanged for a single new metical.
