The 5000 Markkaa was the highest denomination in Finnish circulation when this series was issued, and the timing matters: production and release overlapped directly with the lead-up to the Winter War, which began in November 1939. Notes of this value were primarily instruments of large commercial and interbank settlement rather than everyday trade — ordinary Finns would rarely have handled one.
The series was printed domestically by the Bank of Finland's own printing works in Helsinki, one of the few European central banks at the time operating fully independent note production. Pick 75 is identifiable by its 1939 date and the characteristic laid paper with the embedded watermark — the only security feature on a note of considerable face value, modest by contemporary standards elsewhere in Europe.
