San Marino's lira-denominated coinage ended in 2001 with the republic's adoption of the euro, making this issue part of a deliberately final series. The tiny enclave had maintained its own coinage rights since a treaty with the Kingdom of Italy in 1862, a privilege it retained through the transition to the Italian Republic and right up to monetary union.
KM#436 was struck specifically as the curtain came down on that 139-year run of independent lira coinage.
