Reverse description The reverse presents an allegorical composition by Loredana Pancotto depicting three intertwined botanical sprigs — ivy, wheat, and oak — growing from a common root system rendered in stylized form, symbolising the unity of European nations. Below the root motif, a semicircular arch bears the word EURO in raised letters with roots extending downward, evoking the organic foundations of European integration. The denomination L. 5000 is inscribed prominently in the lower field, with the mint mark R to the left and the engraver's signature L. PANCOTTO in the right mid-field. The thematic legend L'EUROPA DEL NUOVO MILLENNIO arcs along the upper border.

Additional information

San Marino issued a run of commemorative silver lire in the late 1990s as the currency's end was already certain — the republic had committed to adopting the euro alongside Italy, and the 1999 transition gave these final lire issues an implicit finality their face values never suggested. This piece was struck just fourteen months before the lire became legally fixed to the euro at 1,936.27 lire per unit.
