San Marino's endangered species series of the mid-1990s was part of a broader WWF-linked commemorative program that ran across multiple small European states simultaneously. This particular 1996 issue was struck at the Italian State Mint in Rome under the terms of the customs union agreement that has governed San Marino's coinage since 1862 — an arrangement that gives the republic the right to mint its own currency while remaining entirely dependent on Italian monetary infrastructure.
