Additional information

By the mid-1990s, Turkey's chronic inflation had so eroded purchasing power that the 5,000 Lira coin — worth roughly a fraction of a U.S. cent by the time the series ended — was already obsolete in practical terms before it was discontinued. The two catalog varieties (KM#1029.1 and .2) reflect a die modification made during the run, a common occurrence when a denomination lingers through years of currency debasement requiring incremental production adjustments.

The entire Lira system was eventually redenominated in 2005, when one New Turkish Lira replaced one million old Lira.
