| Obverse description | Bare-headed left-facing effigy of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, founder and first President of the Turkish Republic, rendered in moderate relief. The portrait is centered in the field with fine detail in the hair and facial features. The circular legend TÜRKİYE CUMHURİYETİ (Republic of Turkey) runs along the periphery, separated from the effigy by an inner beaded border. |

By the mid-1990s, Turkey's chronic inflation had so eroded purchasing power that the 5,000 Lira coin — worth roughly a fraction of a U.S. cent by the time the series ended — was already obsolete in practical terms before it was discontinued. The two catalog varieties (KM#1029.1 and .2) reflect a die modification made during the run, a common occurrence when a denomination lingers through years of currency debasement requiring incremental production adjustments.
The entire Lira system was eventually redenominated in 2005, when one New Turkish Lira replaced one million old Lira.
