Bulgaria's 1996 hyperinflationary spiral was among the worst in post-communist Europe — annual inflation peaked at over 300% that year before completely collapsing the lev in early 1997, when rates briefly exceeded 2000% monthly. The 5000 Leva denomination, unthinkable a few years earlier, had become routine currency for ordinary transactions by the time this note entered circulation.
Giesecke & Devrient's Leipzig facility handled the contract, a plant with roots in the GDR's state printing works, absorbed into the Munich parent after reunification. The 1997 currency reform ultimately replaced the entire lev series at 1000:1, rendering this note obsolete within months of issue.
