The Glavna Direktsia — the Directorate of State Debts — issued this note as Bulgaria's wartime financing pressures mounted following the country's 1941 alignment with the Axis. The 5000 Leva denomination sat at the high end of the series, intended for large commercial transactions rather than everyday use, though accelerating inflation was steadily eroding even that purchasing power by 1943.
