| Opmerkingen |
Albania's 5000 Lekë was the highest denomination in circulation when it was introduced, a direct response to the inflationary damage left by the 1997 pyramid scheme collapse — an economic catastrophe that wiped out the savings of roughly two-thirds of the Albanian population and triggered a near-complete breakdown of civil order. The note's practical necessity was obvious: smaller denominations had become cumbersome for any transaction of real value.
The hologram strip was a meaningful security upgrade for the Banka e Shqipërisë at this tier, reflecting pressure from the IMF and regional neighbors to reduce counterfeiting vulnerability during the post-crisis reconstruction period.
