Issued to commemorate Ştefan cel Mare, the Moldavian prince whose 47-year reign ended in 1504, this coin appeared precisely 500 years after his death. Ştefan repelled repeated Ottoman, Hungarian, and Polish incursions, winning a remarkable sequence of battles that prompted Pope Sixtus IV to call him athleta Christi — a designation rarely extended to rulers outside Western Europe. The Romanian Orthodox Church canonized him in 1992, adding ecclesiastical weight to a figure already deeply embedded in national memory.
