Bardejov's inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List came in 2000, recognizing its exceptionally intact medieval urban layout — one of the best-preserved Gothic town centers in Central Europe. Slovakia moved quickly to commemorate the designation, issuing this coin just four years later as part of a broader series honoring Slovak sites on the World Heritage register. The series was a deliberate exercise in cultural diplomacy during the period immediately surrounding Slovakia's EU accession in May 2004.
