| Descripción del anverso | The obverse presents an architectural composition combining the interior and tower of St. Martin's Coronation Cathedral with Bratislava Castle and a portion of its fortification walls. The circular legend SLOVENSKÁ REPUBLIKA is divided across both sides of the design. The state coat of arms is centered at the bottom of the field, flanked by the split date 20 08. The stylized initials of the two designers are engraved near the upper rim, with MR (Miroslav Ronai) to the left and BR (Branislav Ronai) to the right above the fortification. |

Matthias II became King of Hungary in 1608 after leading a rebellion against his own brother, Rudolf II, forcing Rudolf to cede Hungary, Austria, and Moravia to him before eventually taking the Bohemian crown and the imperial title as well. The Slovak lands fell squarely within his kingdom, giving the National Bank of Slovakia legitimate historical claim to the subject.
The .900 fineness follows the standard adopted for the NBS commemorative gold program launched in the 1990s, consistent across the 5000 Korun denomination series.
