| Obverse description | Right-facing uniformed bust of King Savang Vatthana occupying the upper half of the field, depicted with close-cropped hair and wearing a military tunic with an ornate embroidered collar. Below the bust appears the traditional Laotian three-headed elephant (Erawan) standing on a pedestal flanked by ceremonial parasols, a classic royal emblem of the Kingdom of Laos. The legend ROYAUME DU LAOS arcs along the right periphery in Latin script, while the equivalent inscription in Lao script runs along the left periphery. |

This coin was struck in the final months of the Kingdom of Laos's existence. The Pathet Lao abolished the monarchy in December 1975, forcing King Savang Vatthana to abdicate — the last act of a royal institution dating to the Lan Xang kingdom of the 14th century. He died in a re-education camp sometime around 1978, the exact date never officially confirmed by the Lao PDR government. KM#16.1 distinguishes the dated variety from the undated KM#16.2, both struck the same year, almost certainly for export and collector sale rather than any meaningful domestic circulation.
