Laos issued a series of commemorative silver pieces through the late 1990s almost entirely for the export collector market — these coins saw no meaningful domestic circulation and were produced specifically for sale through international numismatic distributors. The 1999 Olympics issue falls squarely into this category, struck to coincide with the Sydney 2000 Games cycle and sold well outside the country's borders.
