The Inti was introduced in 1985 to replace the Sol at a rate of 1,000 to 1, itself an acknowledgment that the old currency had been consumed by inflation. By 1988, when this note was issued, that effort was already failing — Peru was deep into the hyperinflationary spiral that would eventually require yet another replacement currency, the Nuevo Sol, in 1991. The 5,000 Inti denomination, unthinkable at the Inti's launch three years earlier, was a direct symptom of that acceleration.
Giesecke & Devrient handled printing throughout the series. The watermark is the sole mechanical security feature — a reflection of how quickly the denomination structure was outpacing the infrastructure to protect it.
