| Descripción del anverso | Printed in red-brown intaglio on cream paper, the note carries the heading BANQUE DE FRANCE and a centred place-date line PARIS, le 08 Mai 1846 above the large denomination legend cinq mille francs. The central text panel is flanked by elaborate allegorical vignettes set within ornamental pilasters with foliate scrollwork, and two circular medallion vignettes at left and right contain classical figural scenes. Three manuscript signatures appear in the lower portion alongside registration entries inscribed au Registre de contrôle, with corner serial numbers and folio references completing the document-style layout. |

The 5000 Francs type of 1846 was among the highest denominations in French circulation during the July Monarchy and into the early Second Republic — a note that changed hands almost exclusively between banks, notaries, and major commercial houses. At a time when a skilled Parisian craftsman might earn three francs a day, few ordinary people ever touched one. That social reality shaped how these notes aged: handled professionally, often folded for vault storage, rarely abused.
Andrieu and Normand were both trained in the Académie tradition; Andrieu in particular had made his name on Napoleonic medallic work before turning to intaglio banknote engraving. The plates reflect that background — deeply worked, uncompromising in detail.
With 12,175,000 printed across the type's lifespan, survivors are not rare in an absolute sense, but notes from the earliest years of issue are considerably harder to locate than later impressions.
