Guinea's 1970 gold commemorative program was issued under Sékou Touré's government, which had broken from French West Africa in 1958 — the only territory to vote "Non" in de Gaulle's referendum — and subsequently lost all French financial and technical support overnight. The commemorative series was partly a prestige exercise, aimed at projecting national legitimacy to foreign buyers rather than circulating domestically.
The Tutankhamun subject had obvious pan-African political utility for Touré, who consistently framed Guinea within a broader African civilizational narrative. Most pieces in this series were sold directly to Western collectors and never entered Guinea at all.
