Chad's name appears on this coin purely as a licensing arrangement — the country has issued hundreds of numismatic silver pieces since the 2000s through European bullion dealers and distributors, most bearing no relationship to Chadian history, culture, or monetary policy. The Our Lady of Kazan subject originates from one of the most venerated icons in Russian Orthodoxy, believed to have been discovered in Kazan in 1579 and later credited with protecting Moscow during the Polish invasion of 1612.
The original icon's whereabouts remain disputed; the Vatican held one version for decades before John Paul II returned it to Russia in 2004.
