The West African CFA franc is technically issued under the authority of the Banque Centrale des États de l'Afrique de l'Ouest, but high-denomination silver pieces like this one are contracted through private minting houses — most commonly Scottsdale Mint or B.H. Mayer's — and have no realistic circulation life in Ivory Coast or anywhere in the WAEMU zone. The 5000 FCFA face value represents roughly nine US dollars at current exchange rates, a fraction of the silver melt alone.
