The "Amiot 143" designation refers to the AAC.1 Amiot 143, a French medium bomber that entered service with the Armée de l'Air in the mid-1930s and was already dangerously obsolete by the time France fell in June 1940. Crews flew it anyway — night raids over German positions in the opening weeks of the campaign, accepting catastrophic losses because faster replacements hadn't arrived. Burundi has issued a long-running series of aviation-themed silver pieces using this format, with each coin tied to a specific aircraft type rather than any monetary or political occasion.
