The Caisse Centrale de la France d'Outre-Mer operated as a centralized issuing authority serving France's scattered overseas territories simultaneously — the same note types circulated across jurisdictions as different as Guadeloupe, Réunion, and French Guiana, their purchasing power governed locally but their printing handled entirely in Paris by the Banque de France. At the 5000 Franc denomination, these were high-value instruments in territories where most daily transactions involved far smaller sums.

Robert Poughéon was a Prix de Rome laureate and academic painter whose work for French colonial currency spanned several decades. Jules Piel's engraving work appears frequently in Banque de France productions of this period, often in collaboration with Marliat, who handled both faces here.
